VMEC is a program of the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Manufacturing Extension Partnership; the Vermont State Colleges; the Vermont Agency of Commerce and Community Development; and the Vermont Technology Council.

Measurable Improvements

BioTek Instruments, a leader in microplate instrumentation technology, enjoys a growing worldwide demand for its products. To help sustain client satisfaction, the Winooski firm decided to apply VMEC’s Lean manufacturing techniques throughout the organization.

The Vermont Manufacturing Extension Center strives to be “the best resource for Vermont manufacturers.” Its professional consulting, workshops, and one-on-one coaching have helped over 2,000 small and mid-size manufacturers succeed.

Through VMEC’s services, client companies increase their productivity, modernize their processes, adopt advanced technologies, reduce costs, and improve competitiveness. The result is greater efficiency, higher levels of customer satisfaction, improved workforce stability, and increased sales and profits.

Working with VMEC, BioTek personnel analyzed their work processes and then innovated new approaches, with the goals of increasing their productivity and job satisfaction.

Bottom-line results in the machine shop were typical: A 50% reduction in set-up hours per machined component; overall 3.5% reduction in total component cost; and 150% increase in CNC machine tool life.
