Among the Membership

Dr. Paula Fives-Taylor, emeritus professor of microbiology at UVM, has focused on bacterial mechanisms in disease, particularly tooth decay.

Dr. John Hughes, UVM professor of psychiatry, is a leading researcher on nicotine dependence and alcohol and drug abuse.

Dr. Patricia Manley, professor of geology at Middlebury College, is an oceanographer and paleoclimatologist who was involved in the mapping of Lake Champlain.

The State of Vermont chartered the Vermont Academy of Science and Engineering to honor scientists and engineers for their achievements, promote the interests of science and engineering within the state, educate Vermonters about the importance of science and engineering, and help state government address problems in those fields.

Induction into VASE, which is modeled after the National Academies, represents the highest recognition for contributions to science and engineering in Vermont.

Dr. Brooke Mossman, director of UVM’s Environmental Pathology Program, studies respiratory diseases caused by inhaled particles.

Dr. P. Frank Winkler, professor of physics at Middlebury College, is an astrophysicist and leading expert on supernovae.

Mr. Tsukasa Yoshinaka, an engineer at Concepts-NREC, has been a pioneer in gas turbine technology for four decades.
